I remember about ten years ago, DC and Marvel then began its programs of trade paperbacks. The soothsayers then began to prophesy to the industry by this practice.
The reasoning: if it is a paperback, many readers will not buy the comic book series waiting for the paperback comes out, but then the series will sell less and end up closing.
Ten years later, the TPB is a very important part of the publishing pie, and is a life insurance for many series, if only to depend on their monthly sales would close. Read the Vertigo line. Or the case of many independent authors like Dave Sim, Jeff Smith or Robert Kirkman.
